Code of Conduct

Summary

At the core of data.world, Inc., we are a Public Benefit Corporation and Certified B Corporation that proudly practices and lives our mission every day. Our mission calls us to strive to build the most meaningful, collaborative, and abundant data resource in the world in order to maximize data’s societal problem-solving utility; advocate publicly for improving the adoption, usability, and proliferation of open data and linked data; and serve as an accessible historical repository of the world’s data.

In addition to this mission and as a Certified B Corporation, we strive to make a positive impact for not only our employees, customers, and users of data.world, but also the communities we engage in virtually and in-person. Our core values of determination, passion, community, integrity, and curiosity reflect this goal.

In order to bring our values to life, data.world focuses on transparency, diversity, equity, inclusion, responsible business practices, conscientious environmental choices, and investment in our community. Our CEO and Co-founder, Brett Hurt, focused on this commitment as an entrepreneur in the concluding chapter of his book, The Entrepreneur’s Essentials, which you can read for free at that link.

We expect every company we work with to participate and embody our mission, values, and focus. To continue to live out our mission, we conduct business honestly and in accordance with our legal and regulatory obligations. Any conduct that falls outside of this Code of Conduct will not be tolerated, and employees are highly encouraged to reach out to the Legal Team (legal@data.world) or their supervisor if anyone, including companies we work with, fails to meet these requirements.

This Code of Conduct is not meant to address every situation that may fall outside our mission or values, and we expect everyone to conduct themselves ethically and within the confines of the law.

It takes various forms, such as slavery, servitude, forced and compulsory labor, and human trafficking, all of which have in common the deprivation of a person’s liberty by another to exploit them for personal or commercial gain. Under no circumstances, can a person use, or in any way benefit from, forced, bonded, or indentured labor. All employees, contractors, and agents must be free to terminate their employment with reasonable notice.

  • Take sufficient and reasonable steps to prohibit practices that are well known to contribute to the risk or proliferation of modern slavery such as:

    • Charging workers recruitment fees or effectively paying for the opportunity for employment.

    • Retaining worker’s identity documentation such as passports.

    • Requiring workers to provide deposits or bonds.

    • Contract substitution (where the contract with the employer does not match the contract the worker signed with the agent in their home country).

  • No use any child labor. Countries having a minimum age for employment must be respected, and employment should not be allowed before the age for completing compulsory education.

  • Not require employees to work in excess of the relevant legal limits on working hours, overtime hours, or number of working days per week.
