Success Story

Penguin Random House

Penguin Random House is the international home to more than 300 editorially and creatively independent publishing imprints. Their mission is to ignite a universal passion for reading by creating books for everyone. With a rich history dating back to the 1800s, their expansive publishing portfolio contains books and products for readers of all ages at every stage of life.

Rupal Sumaria is the Head of Data Governance at Penguin Random House UK. Her team led a push to democratize data within the organization.

Her search for data catalog was driven by four requirements:

  • Single source of truth – Rupal’s team needed to provide their business users a single reference for the location of any data set, and a single source of truth for what that data means.
  • Data discovery – Rupal needed to empower business users to know what data they have, where it exists, who has access, and how it is being used. With this information, Penguin Random House can better govern their data and reduce risk.
  • Intuitive user experience – The team needed a simple, clean, searchable, easy-to-understand interface to drive user adoption and data democracy across the business.
  • Cloud and legacy functionality – Penguin Random House needed a tool that could work both with legacy systems and cloud-based data storage systems, unifying functionality across all their data.

The Solution

““We wanted to make it a Google-like experience. That’s what everyone is used to; having information at their fingertips, and that’s what we want to do with data at Penguin Random House” – Rupal Sumaria, Head of Data Governance at Penguin Random House UK
